Justice Scalia, Voting is NOT an Entitlement

For all of you who were in a cave yesterday, Justice Scalia threw down the gauntlet against the major pillar of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Justice Scalia stated that the Congress didn't really want to renew the VRA in 2006 even though the Senate voted unanimously and the house was almost the same. Justice Scalia has decided that the Congress was bullied into keeping this most important legislation and that Congress can not be trusted.

Justice Scalia with his statement has shown the country that he is either living in a bubble or has not been paying attention to the attempts to suppress the minority vote in not only the states and jurisdictions that are covered by Section 5 of the VRA, but also in new areas of the country that are now swing states in Federal elections. An even worse option is that he actually supports the GOP's attempts to steal elections at all levels of government.

For those civil rights leaders that fought and died for the right to vote the Justice Scalia statement and court's seeming hostility to the VRA feels like going back in time.  But as John Lewis said yesterday we will not go back. We will not let our fundamental rights as citizens be taken away yet again. Hopefully Chief Justice will not let his court be tainted by the clearly partisan Justice Scalia.
