Commemoration of Bloody Sunday and the Voting Rights Act
Today is the 48th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and it is mind boggling that we are waiting for a decision from the Supreme Court on the whether or not Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) is relevant to the country today. As Vice President Biden said today at the MLK and Coretta Scott Kin Unity Breakfast things have changed but we saw in the 2012 that there are still voter suppression tactics that the government had to fight using Section 5.
Vice President Biden made a heart felt case for the progress that the country has made but that we have that we have to continue the fight. The GOP has made it clear to the country that they realize they have lost the demographic so they are going to shrink the electoral in order to steal elections.
The commemoration of Bloody Sunday this year in particular reminds us of the truth of Vice President Biden's today and Rep. John Lewis words on Wednesday. We have more work to do and we are NOT going back.
As Rev. Al Sharpton said last week, "we're not to cute to march" and we will take to the streets in protest to protect our rights. Once again I say Wake Up America. Don't go to sleep and let your voter rights be taken away.
